Charles Haanel was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in May 22 1866, although after a few years his family moved to St. Louis.
Haanel's first job was as an office boy for the National Enameling and Stamping Company where he stayed for fifteen years.
Being a keen entrepreneur Haanel resigned from his job after observing the opportunities for growing sugar and coffee in Tehuantepec Mexico.
He managed to convince a number of capitalists to invest in his company and was able to buy land in the area to work as a plantation for raising sugar and coffee. He became president of this company.
The plantation was a huge success and in no time became worth a considerable amount of money. It went on to merge with other companies and buying out additional organisations to become one of the largest conglomerates of its time.
As a businessman Haanel didn't confine his interests solely to the plantation but was also President of the Sacramento Valley Improvement Company which went on to own the largest Tokay vineyards in the world. He also held the position of President of the Mexico Gold and Silver Mining Company.
Haanel was not just a businessman either but also a noted author, belonging to the American Scientific League, The Author's League of America, the American Society of Psychical Research, the St. Louis Humane Society and the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce.
Haanel wrote and published several books in St. Louis by Psychology Publishing and also by his Master Key Institute in New York. His most famous book, The Master Key System written in 1912, was filled with the ideas and methods used to gain his success. He also wrote Mental Chemistry and The New Psychology.
There have been rumours that Haanel did not want The Master Key System to be read by everyone, only by a select or elite few of society. Another rumour was that the book was banned by the church.
The truth is that Haanel actively promoted his Master Key System by publishing marketing material and small booklets that acted as nothing more than testimonials for this book. This is possibly why by 1933 The Master Key System had sold over 200,000 copies.
It is also rumoured that Bill Gates discovered and read The Master Key System while at Harvard University causing him to drop out and concentrate on his computer business idea.
This rumour cannot be verified!
But what is true is that Napoleon Hill was massively influenced by Haanel's work. And not surprisingly as The Master Key System teaches everyone the principles and laws that underline reaching success. Whatever it is you want, be it wealth or health The Master Key System shows you how to obtain it.
Written in twenty four parts The Master Key System details the fundamental principles of life and the correct development and use of mental power. Although written to be studied as a correspondence course the book can actually be opened at any page to gleam life changing advice and information.
Although nearly 100 years old this book still teaches information valuable to today. Charles Haanel died in 1949 at the age of 83.
