Prentice Mulford was born in Sag Harbour, New York in 1834. When he was twenty two he left New York for California where he spent many years in mining towns trying to make his fortune in gold, copper or silver.
Although a miner he was also a cook, school teacher, lecturer and keen observer of people around him. But it was from writing for a weekly newspaper, The Golden Era, that Mulford found his fortune where he became known for his humorous writing and colourful descriptions of life as a miner.
He became quite a fixture in the literary circles of San Francisco along with the likes of Twain and Harte in the 1860's.
But, in 1872, Mulford returned once again to New York to become a comic lecturer, author of poems and essays and eventually a columnist for The New York Daily Graphic from 1875 - 1881.
It was while in New York that he wrote some of this best works on mental and spiritual laws including his book The White Cross Library, which dealt with the topic of thought currents and how to use them.
But what makes Mulford so interesting to us is his founding, along with other writers including Ralph Waldo Emerson, of the popular philosophy, New Thought!
Mulford wrote the book Thoughts are Things which served as a guide to this new system of beliefs, this book is still popular even today.
Mulford died at the age of 57 and was buried in an unmarked grave. Thirty years later his body was reburied in Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbour. To mark the spot a large stone was placed there with the words, "Thoughts are Things" written on it.
